Google Gemini integration in Siri might be a bigger deal than we initially thought

Rumors suggest that Apple will be implementing Google Gemini support within Apple Intelligence Siri sometime in the near future, alongside the already-existing ChatGPT integration. A recent backend update even revealed that Apple is already prepared for a Google Gemini integration to debut.

Last week at Google I/O, Google announced a number of interesting Gemini upgrades that might make Siri integration a bigger deal than we might think. Let’s discuss.

Currently, ChatGPT integration with Apple Intelligence allows you to log into your ChatGPT account. This allows for conversations to be saved. It keeps things continuous. Assuming Google Gemini integration also allows you to log into a Google account, it could be a huge leap.

In short, Google is taking advantage of the fact that it already knows a lot about you. Gemini will become more personal, proactive, and powerful – and it’ll soon be able to take advantage of personal context in its answers to you. From Google’s press release:

The best way we can bring research into reality is to make it really useful — in your own reality. That’s where personalization will be really powerful. We are working to bring this to life with something we call personal context. With your permission, Gemini models can use relevant personal context across your Google apps in a way that is private, transparent and fully under your control.

This could potentially be pretty cool. If you already use Gmail, you could soon be able to ask Gemini about emails you’ve gotten. Or, if you use Google Photos, you could ask about what you did last weekend. The potential integrations are endless.

I’m the rare case of someone who actively avoids google services so it would know very little about me at all. I’ll still stick with ChatGPT integration myself but I’m really glad other options are going to be coming into play.

Of course, this all hinges on Apple allowing such an integration to take place. However, this could potentially fill a pretty big gap that Apple has left, since Siri’s personal context implementation has been severely delayed.
